P.S. For those of you currently working out what Uni to firm on UCAS (exciting times!), I listed my top 5 reasons I chose my Uni, and I hope they might help you make up your mind ☺️ (but really, following your gut is the best option 😉).
24/04/2016
So the other day Tom Daley rang me up and asked me to be on a new TV show of his...
I jest...I could never dive off a 10m platform!
I’ve finally done it, I’ve firmed and insuranced on UCAS!!
I never thought this day would come and I am so happy that I can finally say that I am down to start Ancient, Medieval and Modern History at the University of Kent on 17/09/16!! Oh help us all... And failing that, there is a slim chance I will be going to Royal Holloway to do History (so no unconditional for me 😢 Both Unis have the same grade requirements, hence the slim chance that if I don’t get into Kent, I’d get into R.H. - the admissions person said they’re less lenient on insurance choice candidates, which is fair enough). Not to be OTT, or Oscar-speech-like, but it’s been such as struggle to get everything done, and to get the right course on UCAS (over 4 months), it’s such a relief!!
Massive shout out to Sam Crooks BTW! I’m so sorry for pestering you so much, but you have been such a star in getting this all organised for me, and answering my endless emails, so thank you 100 times over! It is such a fitting end to the saga that you went on annual leave the day I got changed onto the right course, you deserve a break!
Anyways, for those of you interested in what makes you really want to do a course, apart from that gut feeling, these are the top 5 reasons I chose Kent!
- The staff seem so friendly. Honestly, the lecturers seem so welcoming and lovely, and like they are there to educate, not because they have to lecture so they can do their research. Yes, if you’re being cynical, they may have been putting it on to sell the place, but let's be positive here, ok! This is a positive, glass half full space haha!
- The course is ideal. I. Can. Do. The. Ancient. Egyptians. Do you know how hard it is to find a course with modules on Ancient Egypt, that isn Egyptology at UCL? Really hard. Other ancient history departments are mainly Greeks and Romans, so this is was such a fantastic discovery. Plus they have modules on the history of medicine (hehe) and this joint honours is about as much history I can do, ANYWHERE, in one degree!!!! Oh and it does help that quite a few modules are 100% coursework (exams and me don’t mix), as well as the fact that there are only 3 compulsory modules over the three years (two in year 1, and the third is your dissertation!). Hurrah for shaping you degree to the max 😄
- They have so many societies that I am interested in. There is advanced Ballet, Latin and Ballroom (to get my strictly on!!), Costume Making, Harry Potter & Dr Who (and possibly Sherlock- basically I’m giving in to my inner geek) AND a non-drinking society (I have found my people!!). As you guys know, I have been freaking out about being a non-drinker at university, and the discovery of Are You Not Drinking Much (which fyi has a sister society at Reading) basically sold Kent to me, if nothing else. Hurrah!!
- The city is fabulous. I would describe it as the York of the South. It is the right size for someone transferring from a small town, who's not used to massive cities; close to London; has good shops etc; and obviously Canterbury Cathedral (free entrance to students, hurrah!), who's library you can visit as part of some medieval modules, to look at their old books ☺️
- The library is fab. Yes, I judge Universities on their libraries, but it is important that, as I’m doing history, it has sufficient books and study space. They’ve recently done it up, and I can’t wait to study there. I mean, TBH, I preferred York’s library, but no Ancient History there so what am I supposed to do?!
Anyways, I’m really hyped, but back to earth for a minute, need to revise to get there- to my Classics essay! (yes I wrote 2 blog posts in one go to avoid it...)
